In the first chapter, Tayo is having bad dreams roughly his time in the Philippines. He was there for the state of fight, and has terrible memories of his lost uncle and cousin. Tayo has flashbacks to the war and to happy times he and Rocky had. Tayo remembers a native invention rough why the droughts happen. His friends keep talk about war stories and Emo makes rude comments about Tayo. Tayo gets angry and jumps at him and is taken by the cops. Tayo flashes back to when he and Rocky gestural up for the war. He remembers how his Aunt would never refer to him as Rockys brother. The story of Tayos mother exit the reservation is told, and to a greater extent of the drought story is mentioned. Tayo remembers a curriculum for Josiah to have cattle. tho they get away and Josiah ends up locomote in make do with a Mexican woman and they croak the summer there. finally Tayo makes love to the woman and she tells him change is all around. Soon Tayo leaves the block off to get soup. He has a flashback to the war and Josiah telling him about flies. Tayo spends the night in Harleys barn. Soon Robert says Tayo needs more help so they go to Gallup to aline a medicine man. Tayo! sees the medicine man Betonie and his helper Shush.
